3.2.6 AutomaticShut-O󰀨(SO)System
TheAutomaticShut-O󰀨Systemisdesignedtoturno󰀨thefuelsupplytotheTEGiftheburn-
ergoesout. TheSO valvecontainsanelectromagnet thatispowered by athermocouple
mountedontheburner(seeFigure15).Whenthethermocoupleisnolongerheatedbythe
ame,thecurrentwilldroptozero,causingthevalvetoclose.
IftheSOvalvefailstostayopenafterthegeneratorhaswarmedupforveminutesthenthe
SOsystemneedstobechecked.
1) MakesurethatthebuttonontheSOvalveisfullydepressedbeforereleasingit.This
isnecessarytoactivatethelatchingcoilofthevalve.
2) ChecktheThermocouple
a) RemovethethermocouplettingfromthebottomoftheSOvalve.
b) Connect one lead of an ohm meter to the end of the thermocouple tting.
Connect the other lead of the ohm meter to the casing of the thermocouple
cable.Ifanohmreadingregistersonthemeterthenthethermocoupleisokay.
Iftheresistanceisequaltoinnitythenthethermocoupleisdamagedandmust
bereplaced.
3) ChecktheShut-O󰀨Valve.
a) RemovethethermocouplettingfromthebottomoftheSOvalve.
b) ConnectoneleadofanohmmetertotheSOvalveatthepointwherethetipof
thethermocouplewasincontactwiththevalve.Connecttheotherleadofthe
ohmmetertothecasingoftheSOvalve.
c) IfanohmreadingregistersonthemeterthentheSOvalveisokay.Iftheresis-
tanceisequaltoinnitythentheSOvalveisdamagedandmustbereplaced.
