35IM483 Operating Instructions Revision R032306
EXAMPLE: A 6 lead motor in half coil conguration
has a specied phase current of 3.0A
3.0A x 1.4 = 4.2 Amps Peak
EXAMPLE: A 6 lead motor in full coil conguration
with a specied phase current of 3.0A
3.0A per phase = 3.0 Amps Peak
EXAMPLE: A 4 lead motor has a specied phase cur-
rent of 2.0A
2.0A x 1.4 = 2.8 Amps Peak

Stepper motors can be congured as 4, 6 or 8 leads. Each conguration
requires different currents. Shown below are the different lead congu-
rations and the procedures to determine the peak per phase output cur-
rent setting that would be used with different motor/lead congurations.
4 L e a d M o t o r s
Multiply the specied phase current by 1.4 to determine the peak
output current.
6 L e a d M o t o r s
1) When conguring a 6 lead motor in a half coil conguration (i.e.
connected from one end of the coil to the center tap (high speed
conguration)) multiply the specied per phase (or unipolar) current
rating by 1.4 to determine the peak output current.
2) When conguring the motor so the full coil is used (i.e. connected
from end-to-end with the center tap oating (higher torque congu-
ration)) use the per phase (or unipolar) current rating as the peak
output current.
NOTE! The PEAK current will be used to determine the current
adjust resistor value, NOT the RMS current! This represents
the maximum output current that should be set for your IM483
driver!
