SECONDARY SOLID STATE STARTER
CYCLING SHUTDOWN MESSAGES
SEC SSS: Communications Fault
After communications have been successfully estab-
lished in the INITIALIZATION process, the Control
Center transmits to the solid state starter on the seri-
al communications link every two (2) seconds. After
these communications have been established, if the
control center does not receive a reply within ten (10)
consecutive attempts, a cycling shutdown is performed
and this message is displayed. This same cycling shut-
down is performed, along with the same message, if
the solid state starter does not receive a response from
the control center after ten (10) consecutive attempts
to communicate with the control center. The control
center will attempt to establish communications until
successful.
SEC SSS: Invalid Starter Model
The position of the jumpers on the SSS logic board
may be placed in the incorrect position. Check jumper
positions.
SEC SSS: Phase Loss
The liquid cooled solid state starter logic/trigger board
has detected the line-to-line RMS voltage in any phase
has decreased to 30% or below the lowest value of the
programed voltage range. If the programmed voltage
range is DISABLED, a value of 60VAC is used as the
threshold.
SEC SSS: Phase Locked Loop
The liquid cooled solid state starter logic/trigger board
phase locked loop circuit was not able to maintain lock
with phase A of the power line. This could be caused
by a power line anomaly such as sag or jitter. A power
line frequency jitter of up to 3 Hz/second can be toler-
ated.
This fault also shows if the power was applied to the
chiller in a manner where the LCSSS 3-Phase line was
powered after the chiller control panel was already boot-
ed up. Power down the control panel and re-energize
after the LCSSS has power.
SEC SSS: Power Fault
The liquid cooled solid state starter logic/trigger board
has detected that the compressor motor current in one
or more phases has decreased to less than 10% of the
FLA for a minimum of one (1) line cycle. This check
is inhibited during the first four (4) seconds of chiller
operation and until the motor current is above 25% of
the Job FLA.
SEC SSS: Run Signal
The Economizer Compressor Solid State Starter re-
ceives two start signals from the Control Center simul-
taneously; one via the serial communications link and
one via the start relay in the Control Center. If they are
not received within 5 seconds of one another, a shut-
down is performed and this message is displayed. This
is generally indicative of defective wiring.
SEC SSS: Current Imbalance
The three phase compressor motor current imbalance
was greater than 30% continuously for 45 seconds. The
imbalance is not checked until the chiller has been run-
ning for at least 45 seconds and the average of the three
phases of motor current is greater than 80% of the pro-
grammed 100% chiller Full Load Amps.
The average is calculated as:
Iave = (Ia+Ib+Ic) / 3
The imbalance is calculated as:
(Ia-Iave) + (Ib-Iave) + (Ic-Iave)
x 100
2(Iave)
The LCSSS detects the unbalance condition and ad-
vise the Optiview Control Center Microboard via serial
communications.
The LC SSS returns the 3-phase motor current values
to the Control Center where the unbalance calculation
is performed.
SEC SSS: Current Overload
The highest phase of the compressor motor current
increased to greater than 105% of the programmed
100%chiller Full Load Amps continuously for 40 sec-
onds. In order to initiate restart, the control panel’s re-
set button must be pressed.
SEC SSS: High Instantaneous Current
The Solid State Starter Logic/Trigger Board detected
that the compressor motor current in any phase exceed-
ed 1.1(1.414 x RMS value of the programmed Start
Current) for a minimum of 1 second. In order to initiate
restart, the control panel’s reset button must be pressed.
