9.2. Networking
LAN Connection9.2.1.
Click on the LAN Connection link to configure your Ethernet
disk for connecting to your home network. You can configure it
to obtain a dynamic IP address (the default), or you can assign
it a static IP address. You can also optionally configure your
Ethernet disk to use your ISP’s DNS servers when resolving host
names. This is required if your Ethernet disk is assigned a static
IP address. By default your Ethernet disk runs its own DNS server,
but if you have DNS-related problems when using it, you can
enter your ISP’s DNS servers here to make the Ethernet disk use
them instead of its own DNS server.
Network Services9.2.2.
On this screen you can control access to services, both internally
from your own network, and externally from the Internet. If you
do not plan to use a service, its safest to turn access to that
service OFF.
File Transfer Protocol (FTP): Allows file transfers via FTP (the rel-
evant router port must be opened).
Router Configuration9.2.3.
This page helps you to configure your router to make the best
use of your Ethernet disk.
Router Configuration
To aid you in accessing your router’s configuration screens, the
HipServ™ Router Configuration screen provides a link to it. This
is particularly helpful if you do not know the IP address of your
router. See Appendix A: Router Configuration for more informa-
tion.
Router UPnP Negotiation
To allow you to use your HipServ™ remotely from the Internet,
and to allow you to share content with friends and family, your
HipServ™ uses UPnP to forward certain ports to itself. You can
use the provided link to re-negotiate the connection (for exam-
ple, if your HipServ’s™ IP address has changed).
