Removing and installing thermostats

Loosen the mounting bolts of the cover.
Loosen the mounting bolts of coolant manifold at
the liquid-cooled exhaust pipe and take off both
components together.

The annular-slide thermostats are inserted in the
cooling-pump housing.
Check the function of the thermostats as
follows:
D Suspend the thermostat in a bowl of water
D Heat up the water
D Using a suitable thermometer, ascertain the
start of opening and compare it with the
setpoint value in “Service Data”
D If necessary, measure the opening stroke
Replace defective thermostats.
Insert thermostats with new seals.
Fit the coolant manifold and cover with new seals.
Caution:
Never operate the engine without its thermostats.
