Solution: The requirements for SIMMs are as follows:
For a 1620/1640:

30 pins, 70 ns or faster, 1M x 8 SIMMs with tin contacts (NOT GOLD).
They must be configured to make either 2, 4, 6 or 8 Megabytes of
memory.
