Message Conventions
Observation Reporting (ORU) Message Syntax
The Unsolicited Observation Reporting (ORU) message that the monitor sends to the
server contains patient data, including:
Patient information
Medical Record Number (MRN) or other ID used as the patient identifier
First Name
Middle Name
Last Name
Gender
Age
Height
Weight
Monitor Name
Location ID (also called Bed ID)
Transaction ID (also called Visit Number, Account Number, Finance Number (FIN))
Operator ID
Department
Admit Time
All measurements currently available on the monitor
Any high or low alarms that have occurred since the data was last exported
DT Data type of the field. Some common data types are:
ST = String
NM = Numeric
TS = Time stamp
CE = Coded element
Len Maximum length of the field (for primitive types only).
Usage Indicates whether the field is required or conditional in the segment. The
abbreviations are:
R = Required element
RE = Required, but can be empty
C = Conditional – based on predicate evaluation
CE = Conditional, but can be empty
Min Minimum number of occurrences.
Max Maximum number of occurrences.
Table Number of the HL7 table containing valid values for the field.
