1.1 System overview
Overview
SIMOTION D is the drive-based variant of the SIMOTION Motion Control System based on
the new SINAMICS S120 family of drives. With SIMOTION D, the SIMOTION motion control
functionalities and the SINAMICS drive software run on a SINAMICS closed-loop control
hardware device.
Like SINAMICS S120, SIMOTION D also follows the Totally Integrated Automation (TIA)
concept. TIA is characterized by integrated data management, configuration, and
communication for all products and systems. Thus, a comprehensive building set of
automation blocks are also available for SIMOTION D.

Note
In order to cover all variants of SIMOTION D, the product will be referred to as "D4x5".
Specific product designations will be used for information that applies only to one product
version, e.g., D435.

Application
Because of its compact structure, SIMOTION D4x5 is especially recommended for the
following:
• Compact machines
• Distributed automation concepts, e.g., on machines with a large number of axes
• Modular machines, also as extension to SIMOTION P or SIMOTION C
• For time-critical requirements on coupled axes
Product variants
There are three versions of SIMOTION D in booksize form: D425, D435 and D445. They
differ in their computer performance and therefore in the clock rate, PLC performance, and
axis data volume. All three variants have identical interfaces and an integrated drive control
for up to six drives.
The following table shows the different SIMOTION D versions along with their typical
properties.
