Chapter 1 System Console 9
To Connect to the Solaris Console From the
ALOM Prompt
Use the console command from the ALOM prompt.
If Solaris software is running, the system responds with the Solaris prompt:
If the system was in the OpenBoot PROM, then the system responds with the
OpenBoot PROM prompt:
If the server is in Standby mode, the following message is generated:
Note The console command first attempts to connect to the Solaris console. If the
Solaris console is not available, the console command then attempts to connect to
the OpenBoot PROM. If the attempt is unsuccessful, the following message is
displayed: Solaris is not active.
OpenBoot PROM ok Prompt
A server with the Solaris OS installed operates at different run levels. Most of the
time, a server operates at run level 2 or run level 3, which are multiuser states with
access to full system and network resources. Occasionally, you might operate the
system at run level 1, which is a single-user administrative state. However, the
lowest operational state is run level 0. At this state, it is safe to turn off power to the
system.
When a server is at run level 0, the OpenBoot PROM ok prompt appears. This
prompt indicates that the OpenBoot firmware is in control of the system.
For more information about the OpenBoot PROM, see Chapter 3.
