1. Apply t he parking brak e firmly.
2. Turn off unnec ess ary light s and acces-
sories.
3. Manual transmission: Press the cl utch
pedal to the f loor and s hift the trans-
miss ion into neutral . Hold t he clut ch
pedal to the f loor until the engine is
star ted.
Automatic transmission or Mul ti-
drive: Put t he shi ft l ever in “ P”. If you
need t o restar t the engine while the
vehic le i s m oving, put t he shi ft lever in
“N”. A st arter s afety devic e w ill pr event
the s tart er f rom operating if the shif t
lever i s in any driv e position.
4. Automatic transmission and Multi-
drive only: Depres s the brake pedal
and hol d it to t he floor until dri ving off.
Before s tarti ng the engine, be sure t o fol-
low t he ins truc tions i n “( a) Bef ore c rank-
ing”.
Normal star ting procedure
(gasolin e engine)
The multiport fuel injection system/sequen-
tial multiport fuel injection system in your
engine automat icall y cont rols the proper
air−f uel mixtur e f or st arting. You can st art
a cold or hot engine as follows :
With your foot off the ac celer ator pedal,
crank t he engine by turni ng the engine
swit ch to “S TART” pos iti on. Release i t
when the engine starts .
Engine should be war med up by driving,
not in idle. For warming up, drive with
smoothl y tur ning engine until engine cool-
ant temperatur e is withi n normal range.
