If you per form maintenance by yourself,
be sure to fol low t he cor rect procedure
given in this Section.
You shoul d be aware that improper or i n-
complet e serv ici ng may resul t in operat ing
problems .
This Sec tion giv es ins truc tions only for
those items that ar e r elati vely easy for an
owner t o perf orm. As explai ned in Sec tion
6, ther e are still a number of items that
must be done by a qual ifi ed t echnic ian
with spec ial tools .
Utmost care should be tak en when work-
ing on y our v ehicle to pr event acc idental
injur y. Here ar e a few prec autions that
you should be especi ally car eful to ob-
serve:
CAUTION
D When the engine is r unning, keep
hands, clothi ng, and tools away
from the movi ng fan and engine
drive belts. ( Removing rings,
watches, and ties is advisable.)
D Right after dri ving, t he engine
compartment —the engi ne, radi ator,
exhaust manifold and spark plug
boots, et c.—wil l be hot . S o be care-
ful not to touch them. Oi l, flui ds
and spark plugs may also be hot.
D If the engine is hot, do not remove
the coolant r eservoir cap or loosen
the drain plugs to prevent bur ning
yourself .
D Do not leave anyt hing that may
burn easily, such as paper or rags,
in the engine compartment.
D Do not smoke, cause sparks or al-
low open fl ames around fuel or the
battery. Their fumes are flammable.
D Be ext remely cautious when wor k-
ing on the battery. It contains poi-
sonous and cor rosive sulf uric acid.
