Sawchainshotisthehighvelocityseparationandejection

brokensawchaininmechanizedtimberharvesting.
CAUTION:Sawchainshotexposesboth
machineoperatorsandbystanderstoarisk
ofseriousinjuryordeath.
Sawchainshottypicallyoccursnearthesawdrive
sprocketofthecuttingsystem.Sawchainshotpieces
typicallytravelwithin15degreesoneithersideofthe
sawbarplane.
Asawchainshotconsistsoftwobreaksinasawchain.
First,thesawchainloopbreaks,andformstwoends.One
endmovespastthesawchaindrivesprocketandisrapidly
acceleratedduetoawhip-likemotionofthesawchainend.
The"whipaction"causesasecondbreakinthesawchain,
ejectingpiecesofthecuttingsawchainathighspeed.
Toreducetheoccurrenceofsawchainshot:
•
Donotexceedmaximumsawchainspeed
recommendedbysawmanufacturer.
•
Inspectsawchainandcuttingsystemfrequently.
Replacedullsawchain.Followsawchain
manufacturer’srecommendationsforsawchaintension
andsawchainlubrication.Replacedamagedsaw
chain,sprocket,bar,sawchainshotguard,andsaw
chaincatcher.
•
Alwaysdiscardsawchainafterachainshotevent.
•
Useonlyapprovednewreplacementandrepairparts
fromthesamechainorsawmanufacturer.
•
Keepsawchainssharpandlubricated.Followthesaw
chainmanufacturer’srecommendationwheninspecting,
repairing,sharpening,installing,andbreakinginsaw
chains.
Toreducetheriskofinjuryfromsawchainshot:
•
Neverexposeoperatorsandbystanderstothesaw
chainshothazardzonewhensawchainisinmotion.
•
Allmachinesinsawchainshothazardzonemustbe
ttedwithappropriateguards,shields,andwindowsto
protectoperatorandoperatorstructuresinaccordance
withsafetystandardsandregulationsforforestry
operations.
•
Impactresistantpolycarbonatewindowsare
recommended.
•
Inspecttheoperator’scabwindowsregularlyandafter
anyimpact.Replaceifdamaged,cloudy,orhasvisible
microcrackingorcrazing.
•
Inspectsawchainshotguard(ifequipped)eachtime
thesawchainisreplaced.Replacesawchainshot
guardifitismissingordamaged.
