Double-cuttechnique
CAUTION:Whileanumberoffactorscanaffect
thefellingcontrolanddirectionoflargeor
double-cuttrees,uncontrolledfellingcancreate
ahazardoussituation.Toreducetheriskofthis
occurring,ensureyouuseworksiteplanningand
managementmethodswhenfellingsuchtrees.
NOTE:Duetothepoorformsometimesencountered
duringfellingandprocessing,itissometimes
necessarytousespecialtechniquestohandle
stemssafely,withminimaldamagetothecarrier.
Double-cutsallowtreestofallfreely,whileminimising
damagetothebutt.Topreventdamagetothesawbar,and
tolimittheincidenceof‘barberchairs’,itisrecommended
youusedouble-cutsontreeswithalargerdiameter.
Forlargertrees,itisrecommendedyouusetwocuts:a
frontorcompressioncut(1);andabackorreleasecut
(2).Thisapproachpreventsthetoportipofthecutting
unitfromtravellingoverthedirectioninwhichthetree
falls,which,inturn,preventsdamagecausedbythetree
movingforwardanddown.
Positionthefellingheadsoitislocatedatthefrontor
inthedesiredfall-directionofthetree.Then,makethe
frontcut(1);ensureyoudonotapplyanysideorupward
pressure.Whenthecuttingunitissquarewiththetree’s
fall-direction,nishthecut.
Makethebackcut(2)sothatitishigherthanthefrontcut;
thiswillallowthetreetofalloffalevelandavoidsplitting
woodtowardsthecuttingunit.Whilemakingthecut,
applyasmallamountofsideandupwardpressuretothe
tree;thislevelshouldbedeterminedaccordingtothelean
andsizeofthetree.
Takecarewiththealignmentofthetwocuts,astheremay
be‘holdingwood’remainingoneitherside,whichmay
damagethesawunitifthecutsarenotparallel(3).Ifthe
treebeginstofall,youcanpreventthecuttingunitfrom
returningbyover-cuttingthebackcutwiththefrontcut.
Inordertoensurethecutsareparallel,youmayneedto
alignthefellingheadtocompensate.
