Mechanisedtimberfellingrequiresappropriateplanning,
thesuccessofwhichrestsuponpreviousexperience.
Establishamanagementsystemthatincludesworksite
procedurestolimitpersonnelaccessduringtreefelling.
Thefollowingelementsareimportantwhenformulatinga
fellingplan:

•
Groundconditions(including:waterways;soiltype;
anderosioncontrol)

Treespecies

Stemdensity,stemform,andundergrowth

sites,andlandings

Stafforteammembers’abilitiesandexperience

Beforefellingbegins,thesitemustbeinspected.
Supervisorsshouldensureallteammembersareaware
oftheconstraints,hazardsandrequirementsofthefelling
operation.
Sitemeetingsneedtobeheldregularly,toensurethe
conditionsoftheplanarebeingupheldandtoaddress
anyelementsnotaccommodatedforintheplan.

Preparation
Itisstronglyrecommendedthattheoperatorpossesses
previousexperiencewithoperatingthismakeoffelling
headbeforestartingthefellingprocess.
Inaddition,beforestartingfelling,itisrecommendedthat:

Thecarrierisinagoodcondition,andthatallwindows
areclean.
•
Youinspectthecuttingunittoensureallitselements
areingoodcondition(forexample,theunithasbeen
sharpened).
•
Youtestallcontrols.
•
Thecarrier’s“automaticidle”functionisswitchedoff;
failingtodosomayresultinthecarrieridlingdown
whenthesawchainisinuse.
•
Thelocationofallroads,waterways,andboundaries
havebeennoted/recorded.
•
Youcheckforanyadditionalhazards.
•
Yourunallfunctionstoensurethehydraulicfunctions
havebeenproperlywarmedup.
