Basicprocess
Felling
Paycarefulattentiontothefellingdirectionand
presentationofthestem.Doingsowillreducebreakage
andwillallowyoutopresentastemthathasbeen
appropriatelydelimbed,facilitatingextractionandfurther
processing.
Itisrecommendedyoufellatreeagainstastandingtree
byfellingitjustoffcentretoastandingtree.T akingthis
approachwill:reducetheincidenceofbreakage;providea
largerworkingradius;cushionthefall;reducetheamount
ofundergrowtharoundthebaseofstandingtrees;and
preventthefelledtreefrombecoming“hungup”.
Itisrecommendedtheoperatedengagedinfellinghas
experienceofmanualfelling;thisallowsamorethorough
understandingoffellingtechniques.
CAUTION:Asabreakinthesawchaincanresultin
chainshot,youshouldalwayskeepallpersonnel
atleast90metres(300feet)awayfromthehead
duringfelling.Itisalsostronglyrecommended
youensureallcarrierwindowsanddoorsare
closed.Takeparticularcarewiththehazardous
zone,whichisapproximately15-degreestowards
therearofsprocketandinfrontofthebar-tip.
Failingtofollowwiththeserecommendationscan
increasetheriskofseriousinjuryordeath.
Inadditiontothecautionnotedabove,youshould:

Identifyanytreesintheworkareathatmaybe
particularlyhazardous.
•
Onlyfellthosetreesthatmeetthespecicationsofthe
fellinghead.
•
Cutstumpsaslowaspossible,toreducetheriskofthe
carriertippingoverwhenitrunsoverastump.
Fellingprocess
CAUTION:Asthespeedanddirectionofthewind
willaffectthefellingdirection,youshouldalways
checkthesedetailswhenfelling.Failingtodo
canincreasetheriskofseriousinjuryordeath.
Thedirectionthetreewillfallisdeterminedbytheposition
ofthefellingheadonthetree;thetreeshouldfallina
directlinewiththehead’stiltbracket.
Toobtainthecorrectfellingangle,positionthefelling
headonthetreeaslowaspossible.Todoso,youwill
needtoensurethefellingheadisfullyopenedinthe
tilt-upposition,and,oncetheselectedtreeiscorrectly
positioned,thegrabbingarmsareclosed.
Then,applyasmallamountofpressuretothetree;this
ensuresthesawchaindoesnotjamasthetreeisbeing
cut,andalsoassistswiththefellingdirection.

Whenthesawchainisactivated,thegrabbingarmswill
operateattheirhighestsetting,ensuringthetreedoesnot
movewithinthefellingheadduringcutting.Duringcutting,
youshouldbeabletoseeastreamofchipsleavingthe
sawchainboxarea.
Keepthesawchainactivateduntilyoucan‘feel’thetree
movevertically.Then,stopthesawchain,andapplyforce
tothedesiredfallingdirection.
Ifyouoperatethefellingheadatfullreach,youwill
reducedtheamountoftreecontrolyouhaveduringfelling;
instead,operatethefellingheadtoapproximately3/4of
itsmaximumreach.
Duringthesemanoeuvres,thecarriershouldremainrm
atalltimes.Ifthecarrierbecomesunstable,youwillneed
toimmediatelyreducethehead’samountofreach.
Alwaysensurethecarrier’stracksareonarmfooting;
inparticular,youshouldavoidplacingoneorboth
tracksonstumps,asthismaycausethecarriertomove
unexpectedly.
Thecarrier’spositionwilldeterminetheworkingenvelope;
youcanachieveahigherlevelofproductionthrough
maximumgroundcoveragewithminimaltrackmovement.
Thisapproachhastheadditionalbenetofreducingthe
impactontheenvironment.
