Chapter 7 Wireless
VMG1312-B Series User’s Guide
132
WPS allows you t o quickly set up a wireless net work w ith st rong securit y, without having t o
configure securit y sett ings m anually. Each WPS connect ion works bet ween two devices. Both
devices m ust support WPS ( check each device’s docum entation to m ake sure).
Depending on the devices you have, you can either pr ess a but ton (on t he device itself, or in it s
configurat ion utilit y) or enter a PI N ( a unique Personal I dentificat ion Num ber that allows one device
to aut hent icate t he ot her) in each of the t wo devices. When WPS is activated on a device, it has t wo
m inut es t o find anot her device t hat also has WPS act ivated. Then, t he t wo devices connect and set
up a secure networ k by them selves.
7.10.9.1 Push Button Configuration
WPS Push Butt on Configurat ion ( PBC) is initiat ed by pressing a butt on on each WPS-enabled
device, and allowing them to connect aut om at ically. You do not need t o enter any inform ation.
Not every WPS-enabled device has a physical WPS butt on. Som e m ay have a WPS PBC but t on in
their configuration ut ilit ies instead of or in addition t o the physical butt on.
Take t he following steps t o set up WPS using the but ton.
1 Ensure t hat the t wo devices you want to set up are within wireless range of one anot her.
2 Look for a WPS but ton on each device. I f t he device does not have one, log into its configurat ion
utilit y and locat e t he butt on ( see the device’s User’s Guide for how t o do t his - for the Device, see
Section 7.6 on page 120).
3 Press the but t on on one of t he devices (it doesnt m att er which) . For t he Device you m ust press t he
WPS but ton for m ore t han three seconds.
4 Within two m inut es, press t he but t on on the ot her device. The registrar sends t he net work nam e
( SSI D) and securit y key through an secure connection t o t he enrollee.
I f you need t o m ake sure t hat WPS worked, check the list of associated wireless client s in t he AP’s
configurat ion utilit y. I f you see the wireless client in the list, WPS was successful.
7.10.9.2 PIN Configuration
Each WPS- enabled device has it s own PI N ( Personal I dentificat ion Num ber) . This m ay eit her be
st at ic ( it cannot be changed) or dynam ic ( in som e devices you can generate a new PI N by clicking
on a but t on in t he configurat ion int erface) .
Use t he PI N m et hod inst ead of the push- but t on configurat ion ( PBC) m ethod if you want t o ensure
that the connect ion is established between t he devices you specify, not just t he first t wo devices t o
act ivate WPS in range of each ot her. How ever, you need to log int o the configuration int erfaces of
bot h devices to use t he PI N m et hod.
When you use the PI N m ethod, you m ust enter the PI N from one device ( usually the wireless client)
into t he second device (usually t he Access Point or wireless router) . Then, when WPS is act ivated
on the first device, it presents it s PI N t o the second device. I f the PI N m at ches, one device sends
the network and securit y inform at ion to the ot her, allowing it to join the network.
Take t he following steps t o set up a WPS connection bet ween an access point or wireless router
( r eferred t o here as t he AP) and a client device using t he PI N m ethod.
