8.5 Troubleshooting
If you encounter a system error message on the screen
during operation, you may be able to fix the problem.
For example, you might need to close the printer door or
take some other simple action.
If you are unable to resolve the system error, contact
Advanced Instrument Hot-Line Technical Service for
assistance.
General errors
The following table lists general errors that the system
can detect.
Error Suggested action

Errors during calibration
For a list of errors that can occur during calibration, see
Calibration errors.
Errors during testing
If an error occurs during a test, a message displays on
the screen and is recorded in the events database.
Discard the sample, carefully clean the plunger, and then
try a new sample. If the error occurs again, refer to the
following table to help resolve the problem.
Error Possible cause/Suggested action
Out of
range Low
Out of
range High
Cause: The sample might be outside the range
of the instrument:
• Out of range Low: The measured reading is
below -10 mOsm.
• Out of range High:
– The measured reading is above 1700mOsm
for a low range sample
– The measured reading is above 4200mOsm
for a high range sample
Action:
• Check for particulate matter in the sample.
• Check the range setting currently being
tested (High Range or Low Range,) and
confirm that it is appropriate for the sample
being tested.
• Test a control such as Clinitrol.
Sample did
not freeze
Cause: The sample might be above the range of
the instrument.
Action:
• Confirm sample is present in the sampler.
• Test the solenoid. (See Solenoid
maintenance.)
• Clean the sample probe.
• Test a control such as Clinitrol to see if the
issue persists.
Sample
pre-freeze
Cause: The sample froze prematurely.
Action:
• Re-run a new sample using a known control
such as Clinitrol.
• Check for particulate matter in the sample.
• Clean the sample probe with a chamber
cleaner dampened with water or a cleaning
solution for protein removal. (Thermo
Scientific Orion Cleaning Solution, part
number 900021 is recommended.) .
Test timeout
Cause: The instrument was unable to complete
the test within the allotted time.
Action:
• Check for particulate matter in the sample.
• Test a control such as Clinitrol to see if the
issue persists.
• If the issue persists, the sample might be
outside the range of the instrument.
