Inte l ligent Technology
voltage, the battery cur rent, and the battery
temperature . The current charge leve l and the
pe rformance of the battery are dete rm ined based
on this.
Idling current management
The idling cur rent managemen t d ecreases the
e nergy used whi le pa rked . With the engine
switche d off, it manages the energy distribution
to the different electrical components. Date from
battery d iagnosis is taken into account for this.
Depending on the battery cha rge level, e lectr ica l
eq uipment is switc hed off one item after the oth-
er, to prevent the battery from draining and to
retain the starting ab ility .
Dynamic energy management
While d riving, dynamic energy management dis-
tributes the appropriate amount of energy to the
e lectrical equipment. It controls the battery
charge level so that more energy is not used then
is being generated in orde r to mainta in a n opti-
mal battery charge level.
(D Tips
- Energy management cannot ove rcome the
laws of physics . Note that the charge level
and length of the batte ry life are limited.
- When the starting ability is jeopar dized, t he
(•) indicator light turns on

What you should know
Maintaining the starting ability is the highest
priority.
A lot of stress is placed on the batte ry when d riv-
ing short distances, in tra ffic, and at cold times
of the year. A lot of ene rgy is used but little is
generated.
It is a lso critical when the engine is
not runn ing but electrical equipmen t is switched
on . In t his case, energy is used but none is gener-
ated .
In s ituations like this, energy management will
actively regulated the distribution of ene rgy.

Long periods without use
If you do no t dr ive your vehicle for sever al days or
weeks, e lectrica l cons ume rs a re gradu ally scaled
bac k or sw itched off. This reduces ene rgy use and
ensures the vehicle will be ab le to start after long
per iods of time . Some conven ience functions
s uch as opening with the remote cont rol key may
not be available. These conven ience functions
will be ava ilable again once you swi t ch the igni-
t ion on and sta rt t he eng ine .
With the engine switched off
The battery will dra in if you use Infotainment
funct ions such as listening to the radio while the
engine is switched off .
The vehicle 's ab ility to sta rt may be impa ired by
the energy use, a message will appear in the In-
fota inme nt system display. The message indi-
cates that the system will switc h off automatical -
ly soon . If you wou ld like to continue using the
funct io ns, you must st art t he engine .
With the engine running
Althoug h electrica l energy is generated w hile
driving, the battery can dra in. This ca n happen
wh en litt le energy is generated , a nd much is used
and t he cha rge level of the ba tte ry is not opti mal.
To resto re t he ba lance of energy, components
that require large amo unts of energy are tempo-
rar ily scaled back or switched off. Heat ing sys -
te ms in pa rt icular requir e a great deal of e nergy .
If you notice, fo r exampl e, that th e seat heati ng*
o r rear window defroste r is not wor king, t hen it
has been t empor ar ily redu ced or sw itche d off.
These syst ems are availab le ag a in as soon as the
energy ba lance has been resto red.
In ad dit ion, you may notice t hat the idle spee d
has slig ht ly increase d . That is nor mal an d no
cau se for concer n. Due t o t he increase d idling
speed, the addit ional required energy will be
generated and the battery will be charged .
