ConsiderationsAboutWeldingAndTheEffectsOfLowFrequency
Electric And Magnetic Fields
Weldingcurrent, as it ows through welding cables, will cause
electromagneticelds.Therehasbeenandstillissomeconcern
aboutsuchelds.However,afterexaminingmorethan500studies
spanning17 yearsof research, a special blue ribbon committee
of the National ResearchCouncil concluded that: “The body of
evidence, in the committee’s judgment, has not demonstrated
thatexposuretopower-frequencyelectricandmagneticeldsis
ahuman-healthhazard.”However,studiesarestillgoingforthand
evidencecontinuestobeexamined.Untilthenalconclusionsof
theresearcharereached,youmaywishtominimizeyourexposure
toelectromagneticeldswhenweldingorcutting.
Toreduce magnetic elds in the workplace, use the following
procedures:
1. Keepcablesclosetogetherbytwistingortapingthem,orusing
acablecover.
2. Arrangecablestoonesideandawayfromtheoperator.
3. Donotcoilordrapecablesaroundyourbody.
4. Keepweldingpowersourceandcablesasfarawayfromoperator
aspractical.
5. Connectworkclamptoworkpieceasclosetotheweldaspos-
sible.
