5 Power lines
The following describes different configurations for the installation on the power line
using examples. We will present various problems and possible solutions in the
scenarios sketched out.
The following applies to all power line projects: always test the
dLAN system for correct functioning on-site before
making changes to the
electrical system!
devolo dLAN
adapters are especially optimised for handling interference and their
sources, and are characterised by rock-solid data transmission. For this reason, it is
not necessary to make change to the electrical system as a rule.
When testing, follow these basic rules:
Note the change in power network load during the day
(subject to
the consumers connected). You should perform the test in a real-
world environment where all the consumers are switched on for
this reason.
Test the various socket outlets in a room. The performance of the
dLAN system can often be increased on another socket outlet.
Use the dLAN adapter as far away from other consumers as
possible.
Avoid multiple socket outlets.
Avoid surge protection socket outlets at all costs!
5.1 Power supply systems in single-family homes
Power supply systems in Germany are usually three-phase (RST). A typical single-
family scenario has an electric mains circuit that distributes the load (consumers)
throughout the house as uniformly as possible. Crosstalk between the phases is
almost always inevitable when devolo dLAN technology is used, since the three
phases are routed closely together, and devolo dLAN uses high frequencies between
2 and 30 MHz. Using a phase coupler is not necessary as a consequence.
The parallel wiring for the three phases is located, for instance, on the way to the
fuse box, but an electric oven or flow heater is also usually connected to all three
phases. Moreover, short parallel routing (approx. 50 cm) is wholly adequate for
automatic phase coupling. A phase coupler is required only in very few cases,
therefore, such as when the phases are routed away from the fuse box in star
configuration.
