6 Projects
It is extremely important to plan dLAN projects carefully. Careful preparation and
planning will not only allow you to identify most technical problems in advance, it
will also reduce unnecessary and frequently unexpected costs to a minimum.
We would like to suggest the following approach as an option for performing dLAN
projects, which is based on our long-term experience in this filed. As a rule, the
technical, commercial and altogether human factors of a project vary due to the
various possible scenarios available. As a consequence, it would be useful if you
adapted the approach described below to your own requirements.
Most, and above all, major projects are performed with antenna cable
(coax networks) as the main medium of use. The focus of this chapter is
placed on this kind of cable as a result. The descriptions below can also
frequently be used for other media (e.g., 2-wire, power line).
A dLAN project is performed in three successive phases:
1. Prepara
tion
a. Questioning,
b. Site survey,
c. Detailed planning, calculation of the cost estimate.
2. Implementation
a. Planning the rollout,
b. Performing the rollout.
3. Operation
a. Management,
b. Maintenance and support.
6.1 Preparation
Both technical and commercial aspects play a role when preparing for the project.
We certainly recommend an initial questioning phase, during which you can find out
about the project's potential for success, the basic technical conditions, and also
make a rough estimate of how much time and what costs come into question.
6.1.1 Questioning
