7.2 VLC
VLC is a free audio/video player and streaming server for audio/video data. The
manufacturer and developer is the VideoLAN Team. Further information is available
from the developer's website (http://www.videolan.org
). The player runs under
Windows, Linux and Mac OS X following installation. The following information
refers to a configuration under Windows. Further documentation can be found on
the developer's website.
7.2.1 Application
Streaming usin
g VLC requires 2 computers: the first computer functions as the VLC
streaming server, and the second as the VLC media player. The player receives the
data steam generated by the server and converts it into a visible image. Both
computers should belong to the same IP address group.
Ping in both directions to test whether both computers can "see" each
other.
VLC offers
a variety of parameters. The settings below are meant to show how to
perfectly stream video and audio files in your network, but are merely provided to
show a suitable test process.
Test the VLC streaming solution before driving to your customer.
Make sure you have no firewall or antivirus software running in th
e
background, which may interfere with the test, or even make it impossible.
The follow
ing network settings apply in this example:
Server:
IP address: 192.168.0.16
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.253 (optional)
Client:
IP address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
