7 Useful software
Important: devolo AG provides absolutely no support for the software
described below!
7.1 Iperf
Iperf is a free command-line program for testing network performance on any given
medium. Manufacturer/developer is the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois.
For additional information, refer to the developers' website
(http://dast.nlanr.net/projects/Iperf/
). The command-line program runs under
Windows, Linux and Mac OS X without needing to be installed. The following
provides a description of the configuration for Windows-based computers.
7.1.1 Application
Testing using Iperf requires two computers. The first computer functions as the Iperf
server, and the second as the Iperf client. The client requests data from the server to
which the server responds. Both computers should belong to the same IP address
group.
Ping in both directions to test whether both computers can "see" each
other.
You can start Iperf via the command line directly from the
directory where you have
stored it. In this example, Iperf is stored on the C drive. Iperf can be invoked by a
series of parameters, which are explained below in the examples. Enter IPERF –help
to view a list of parameters and options available.
Make sure you have no firewall or antivirus software running in the
background, which may interfere with the test, or even make it
impossible.
The follow
ing network settings apply in this example:
Server:
IP address: 192.168.0.16
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.253 (optional)
Client:
IP address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.253 (optional)
7.1.2 TCP or UDP
With Iperf, the corresponding transport protocol must be specified for both the server
and the client before test is performed. TCP is the default, so no parameters have to
