II Portable Radio Unit
The Portable Radio Unit is a battery-powered unit incorporating an integral digital radio transmitter/receiver with associated
antenna. A cable and connector from a radio module connects to an infrared (IR) Link Unit on the Bodyguard
®
. The integrated
assembly is able to transmit and receive audible and visual alarm signal data to a Dräger PSS
®
Merlin
®
Entry Control Board.
The radio module is programmed with an equipment owner identification number (Brigade ID) and a Portable Radio Unit
identification number. Supplied with each Portable Radio Unit is a matching tally that is encoded with the same identification
numbers. A label on the tally shows the brigade name, the Portable Radio Unit identification number and three headings that
allow the following information to be added using a suitable waterproof marker:
The name of the wearer.
The cylinder contents pressure on activation of the Bodyguard
®
.
The actual time-in to the risk area (using the clock of the Entry Control Board).
Where a possibility of a radiation risk may be present, a dosimeter reading may be recorded if necessary on the reverse side of
the tally (prior to entry and after exit).
The tally can be assembled on to the key ring of the activation tally of the associated
Bodyguard
®
.
When the tally is inserted into any of the available channels of the Entry Control Board, the
ECB identifies the associated Portable Radio Unit/Bodyguard
®
combination and the digital
communication link is activated. The green and red LEDs of the IR Link Unit on the rear of the
Bodyguard
®
flash intermittently.
A release key unlocks the battery pack from the radio module for removal.
A.1 Power Supply
The Portable Radio Unit is powered from a single 6.5 V rechargeable nickel hydride (NiMH) battery. Continuous operating time
is approximately 8 hours between recharge.
A.2 Charging the Battery
The Portable Radio Unit is supplied without the battery charged or fitted. The battery must be charged before initial use.
Refer to the label attached to the Universal Power Supply (AC) to check that the electrical main supply voltage corresponds to
the specified voltage requirement indicated on the label.
When a charged battery is connected to the Portable Radio Unit, the green LED on the IR Link Unit momentarily illuminates
indicating satisfactory contact.
A.3 Charging Procedure
Connect the jack plug of the AC Adaptor to the multi-charger module.
Insert the battery into an available pocket. The associated LED on the panel will illuminate green continuously, indicating
commencement of main charging.
The LED flashing red (A) (charge pending) indicates:
The battery is in a state of very low charge. Continue charging until main charging starts.
Main charging has been suspended due to the battery temperature (see notice above).
NOTICE
Refer to the Instructions for Use for the Bodyguard
®
for instructions on fitting/replacing the battery of the Bodyguard
®
.
NOTICE
The temperature of the battery is measured by an internal thermistor. To protect the battery, the charging process will stop
if the temperature is below +5 °C or above +40 °C.
Batteries can remain connected to the charger without damage when the charging procedure is complete.
WARNING
The charging unit is not approved to intrinsic safety standards. Do not attempt to charge the battery underground or in an
area designated as, or subject to, an explosion hazard.
