2 Introduction
When the decision is taken to use self-contained respiratory protection apparatus (BA) in a life threatening hazardous environment,
it is essential that an effective control procedure is in place to manage, monitor and safeguard the wearer of the equipment.
In the United Kingdom, the Operational Guidance – Breathing Apparatus / Command and Control Procedures (OGBA), together
with the Manual of Firemanship, provide guidance for fire authorities and firefighters in the introduction, application and
management of a risk based approach to the wearing of breathing apparatus.

Telemetry System package further enhances and supports these control procedures by providing a
means of remote two-way digital data and alert status communication between the wearer of the self contained respiratory
protection apparatus and an external support control module. To achieve communication the Dräger PSS
®
Merlin
®
Telemetry
System modules interface with the electronic system of the breathing apparatus.
It is important to be aware that communication can be affected by a breakdown in the transmission signal due to extremes of
application such as long distance, building construction, below ground structures, etc. Dräger offer repeaters and feeder wires
that enhance the signal effectiveness in harsh environments. Appendix E – on Page 41 provides a basic explanation of signal
propagation and outlines some guidelines to maximise the effectiveness of the system. Contact Dräger for further details.
