B.3 Battery pack
B.3.1 General
The battery pack is a Dräger 6.5 V rechargeable nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery.
Continuous operating time is approximately eight hours between recharge, with the actual
time dependent on operating use, frequency of alarms, age of battery and ambient
temperature.
A low battery condition is indicated by a battery icon on the on the screen and a warning tone,
as detailed in the Bodyguard
®
instructions for use.
The system can be configured to show the battery condition during the self-check sequence
that occurs each time that the Bodyguard
®
system is started. When configured, the battery
charge state is indicated by the segment scale around the screen when the battery icon is on
the screen (the figure shows an almost fully charged battery).
B.3.2 Battery care
When the system is switched off a small amount of battery power is consumed. If the system is not to be used for a long
period, remove the battery pack.
Remove discharged battery packs from the breathing apparatus.
Dräger recommend that a battery health check is carried out every six months. A Dräger 4-way charger is required for this
task (contact Dräger for details).
B.3.3 Fitting the Battery Pack
Lift and turn over the breathing apparatus to access the battery recess.
Inspect the battery pack and the breathing apparatus connectors, and ensure that the O-
ring on the battery is correctly fitted and undamaged. Ensure that the terminals of the
battery pack, modem and pressure transmitter module are clean and undamaged.
Insert the battery pack into the backplate recess.
Position thumbs on top of the two screws and push down firmly to lock the battery pack.
WARNING
Do not fit the Merlin
®
rechargeable battery pack to a breathing apparatus that is not fitted with a Merlin
®
Modem. Exposed
battery terminals may cause a risk of explosion or fire through sparking.
NOTICE
Rechargeable batteries are supplied fully discharged. Charge new battery packs before use.
WARNING
Do not fit a battery pack that has a damaged screw or no screw fitted.
NOTICE
Only install the designated Merlin
®
rechargeable battery pack. The system will not operate if an incorrect battery type is
fitted.
