F.7 BS 8608 Operation
This section describes system functionality when BS 8608 (Specification for radio telemetry systems for use with respiratory
protective devices used by emergency first responders) is enabled. BS 8608 can be enabled on Dräger PSS
®
Merlin
®
telemetry
systems which use the 469.9 MHz ECB.
F.7.1 Adaptive Poll Interval
The poll interval is the time between data transmissions between the ECB and each logged-on electronic monitoring system. The
default poll interval for the system is 20 seconds.
With BS 8608 enabled, the ECB communicates with other ECBs in range and adapts the poll interval according to the total
number of logged-on units in the vicinity. With twenty or less logged-on units in the vicinity, the poll interval is 20 seconds. As the
number of logged-on units increases, the poll interval also increases: with fifty logged-on units, the poll interval will be less than
60 seconds.
F.7.2 Repeater Low Battery
With BS 8608 enabled in the ECB and the Repeaters, the Repeaters send a signal to the ECB
to indicate when they have a low battery. When a low battery signal is received, the ECB emits
an audible beep every five seconds and the status display alternates between the ECB battery
charge state and the Repeater low battery (LOBAT) indication. A unit with a low battery is
indicated as R1 (Repeater no.1) or R2 (Repeater no.2).
F.7.3 Alarm Acknowledgement
When the ECO confirms receipt of an Automatic Distress Signal Unit (ADSU) alarm or a Distress Signal Unit (DSU) alarm at the
ECB, the electronic monitoring system indicates this to the wearer by briefly interrupting the alarm sound with a single audible
beep. A tick mark also appears next to the alarm icon to indicate that the alarm has been acknowledged.
CAUTION
Repeaters without BS 8608 capable firmware will not transmit any signals from a
BS 8608 Repeater if the BS 8608 Repeater is transmitting a low battery signal. If
attending an incident with a mix of BS 8608 and non-BS 8608 equipment, it is advised
to not mix BS 8608 and non-BS 8608 Repeaters.
