Propagation
To maximise propagation of the transmitted radio signal at an
incident, the antenna of the ECB should be positioned as high
as possible above the ground to minimise transmission losses
that may be caused by objects on the ground and also to
reduce the effects of radio waves reflected from the ground. It
is recommended that the ECB is mounted on a tripod (contact
Dräger for details). If a tripod is not available, stand the ECB
safely in an upright position against a suitable stable structure,
although this is not a preferred method.
Keep the area around the antenna of the ECB as clear as
possible to minimise the number of obstructions and to
maintain an in-line sight of the incident. Be aware that even the
user’s body can be detrimental to effective radio signal
propagation.
If propagation problems are experienced between the ECB
and any of the logged-on units, consider lifting the ECB to a
higher location or moving closer (in some cases moving further
away to higher ground may be required). In the case of
incidents inside a structure, if practicable and safe, an option
is to move and site the ECB to where there are more openings
such as windows and doors, or possibly thinner walls to the
structure.
At the rear of the ECB is a connection for the fitting of an
external antenna. This allows an external antenna to be
suitably positioned as high as possible above the ECB. The
external antenna is always necessary if the ECB is to be
located inside a vehicle or control room.
