During thecharging process and starting
assistance, thebatterymay release an explo‐
sivegas mixture.

Avoid fire,open flames,creating sparks
and smoking.
#
Makesurethat thereissufficient venti‐
lation during thecharging process and
during startingassistance.
#
Do notleanoverabattery.

WARNING Risk of explosion from afro‐
zen battery
Adischargedbatterymay freeze at tempera‐
tures slightlyabove or belowfreezing point.
During startingassistance or batterycharg‐
ing, batterygas can be released.
#
Alwaysallowabatterytothawbefore
chargingitorperforming startingassis‐
tance.
If thewarning/indicator lamps do notlight up in
theinstrument displayaround or belowfreezing
point, it is very likelythat thedischarged battery
has frozen.
In this case, observe thefollowing points:

Do notgivethe vehicle startingassistance or
charge thebattery
R
The service lifeofabatterythat has been
thawedmay be reduced drastically
R
The start-up behavior maydeteriorate, partic‐
ularly at lowtemperatures
R
It is recommended that youhave athawed
batterycheckedataqualified specialistwork‐
shop

NOTE Damage caused by numerous or
extendedattempts to startthe engine
Numerous or extendedattempts to startthe
engine maydamagethe catalytic converter
due to non-combusted fuel.

Avoid numerous and extendedattempts
to startthe engine.
When jump-starting and chargingthe batteries,
observe thefollowing points:

Onlyuse undamaged jumper cables/charging
cableswithasufficient cross-sectionand
insulatedterminal clamps
R
Non-insulated parts of theterminal clamps
mustnot comeintocontact with other metal
parts while thejumper cables/charging
cables areconnected to thebattery/jump-
startconnectionpoint
R
The jumper cables/chargingcablesmustnot
comeintocontact with anyparts whichmay
move when theengine is running
R
Alwaysmakesurethat neither younor the
batteryiselectrostatically charged
R
Alwayskeep away from fire and open flames
R
Do notlean overabattery
R
When charging: only use abatterycharger
that has been tested and approvedbyFreight‐
liner Sprinter and read theoperating instruc‐
tions foryour chargerbeforecharging the
batteries
Observe theadditional following pointsduring
startingassistance:
R
Startingassistance mayonly be provided
using batteries withanominal voltageof12V
R
The vehicles mustnot toucheachother
R
Vehicles with agasoline engine: only per‐
form startingassistance when theengine and
exhaustsystemare cold
#
Vehicles with abatterymain switch: check
whether thebatterymain switchisinserted

#
Secure thevehicle using theparking brake.
#
Vehicles with automatic transmission:
shiftthe transmission to position j.
#
Switchoff theignition and all electrical con‐
sumers.
#
