7. The Smart V1 Antenna is capable of using SBAS (WAAS), CDGPS, or Omni Star differential
corrections to positioning. See www.omnistar.com
website for more information and to
initialize Omnistar service.. If this is desired and the satellites are available in your survey
area you must perform this additional step. If you have any trouble with your V1 Smart
Antenna, please contact NovAtel Customer Service at Email: support@novatel.ca

correction status. LbandStat_10.txt causes the V1 Smart Antenna to transmit the
LbandStat message once every 10 seconds.
9. Turn off the battery box GPS power switch.
10. Disconnect the P/N 25358-20 adapter cable and reconnect the GPS serial cable to the G-859

Interfacing with User Supplied GPS Receivers
The RS-232 port of the G-858BP is extremely versatile. The set-up procedure for RS-232
communication is sometimes complex, meaning that you will need to carefully study this section and
experiment to get user supplied (non-Novatel SmartAntenna™) external GPS equipment to work with the
G-858BP.
Before connecting your GPS to the G-858BP, please make sure you completely understand how to
operate the GPS system. GPS receivers will send data out in many formats, and you must know what
commands will tell it to give you the data you wish. You may then program the G-858BP to send these
commands to the GPS receiver.
The next step is to program the commands needed by the GPS unit into the G-858BP. This is
done by selecting EXT RS-232 & FIELD NOTE SETUP from the main System Setup menu. See the
section earlier in this chapter for information on programming keystrokes to send commands to the GPS.
You will need to connect the GPS to the G-858BP using the proper serial cable. Most GPS units
will require a null-modem adapter between the supplied RS-232 cable for the G-858BP and the GPS port.
