2.11 USB (universal serial bus) connection
The universal serial bus (USB) is a serial bus system for connecting a computer to external devices.
Devices or storage media equipped with USB, such as USB sticks and external hard drives, can be
connected to each other during operation and connected devices along with their properties are recog-
nised automatically.
The Mini-LAS 11-R has two USB interfaces on the left side panel:
One USB interface for control and one for storage.
When you connect a USB stick to your Mini-LAS 11-R via USB-A, you can use the following functions:
- Measurement data backup to a USB stick
- Installing firmware updates from a USB stick
When you connect your Mini-LAS 11-R to a computer via USB-B, you can use the following functions:
- Controlling the Mini-LAS 11-R using a terminal programme (see Section 5.1);
- Controlling the Mini-LAS 11-R using the GRIMM Windows 1178 software (see Section 5.2).
Connect the USB interface on the Mini-LAS 11-R to a Windows PC and, in the terminal programme,
select the interface proposed to you for communicating with the spectrometer. Then send a V to initial-
ise the current interface.
2.12 LAN (local area network) connection
A local area network, LAN for short, is a computer network that connects various devices to each oth-
er (computers, printers, fax machines and more). The size of a LAN is limited to a distance of 500 me-
tres without additional measures and is usually used for home networks or in smaller companies.
The LAN connection is shown in Figure 2-2.
When you connect your Mini-LAS 11-R to a computer network via the LAN connection, you can use the
following functions:
- Visualising the measuring data
- Backing up the measuring data to a network
- Controlling the device using terminal software
- Controlling the device using the GRIMM Windows 1178 software.
The device is configured with an internal IP address at the factory. This can be adjusted by the user as
needed for use on a network.
