2 Affinity® 4 Birthing Bed Instructions for Use (USR025 REV 13)
SAFETY INFORMATION
Obey all warnings throughout this document. Failure to do so could cause injury and/or equipment
damage:
• Warning—Read and understand all warnings in this document and on the unit itself prior to
use with a patient.
• Warning—Follow the product manufacturer’s instructions.
• Warning—To help prevent the risk of hospital bed fires, make sure facility persons follow the
safety tips in the FDA Public Health Notification: Safety Tips for Preventing Hospital Bed Fires. (US
only)
• Warning—Evaluate patients for entrapment and fall risk according to facility protocol, and
monitor patients appropriately.
• Warning—The bed should be left in the lowest position when the patient is unattended.
• Warning—Make sure that you position tubes, lines, and linens away from moving parts.
• Warning—Make sure patient hands are kept away from moving parts while operating the bed.
• Warning—Stay clear of pinch and contact points while adjusting the foot support.
• Warning—Make sure the position of the unit is such that you can quickly, without obstruction,
unplug the power cord from the main power supply if necessary.
• Warning—The potential for electrical shock exists with electrical equipment. Failure to follow
facility protocols may cause death or serious injury.
• Warning—Establish policies and procedures to train and educate your staff on the risks
associated with electrical equipment.
• Warning—Incorrect use or handling of the power cord may cause damage to the power cord. If
damage has occurred to the power cord or any of its components, immediately remove the
Base from service, and contact the applicable maintenance persons.
• Warning—To reduce the risk of electric shock, the bed should only be connected to supply
mains with a protective earth.
• Warning—If the integrity of the external protective earth conductor is in doubt, operate the
bed from its internal electrical power source.
• Warning—Use only Hill-Rom power cords as a replacement. Other power cords have not been
investigated for compliance with electrical safety standards for this product.
• Warning—Use only Hill-Rom specified mattresses, parts, and accessories. Do not modify the
bed system without authorization from Hill-Rom.
• Warning—The included power cord set and Li-ion battery may not be used with any other
equipment other than Affinity® 4 Birthing Bed models they are packaged with.
• Warning—Do not operate the bed in the presence of flammable gas or vapors.
• Warning—Young children should be supervised around the bed.
• Warning—Visitors should not sit on the bed.
• Warning—Use oxygen administering equipment of the nasal, mask, or ventilator type only. Do
not use the bed with oxygen tents.
• Warning—Deactivate the bed functions using the lockout control. Movement of a patient or
inadvertent activation of the bed functions by anyone else could result in personal injury.

Warning—Do not use the bed if it a malfunction occurs. Contact the applicable maintenance
persons.
