Model numbering
The M-series switches typically use the numbering scheme x/y:
xThe highest speed at which the switch ports can operate, measured in Gb/s
yThe number of switch ports
For example, the HP StorageWorks Edge Switch 2/32 is a 2 Gb/s switch with 32 ports.
The 4 Gb/s and 2 Gb/s switch ports autonegotiate the signaling speed. For example, when you
connect a 4 Gb/s or 2 Gb/s port directly to a 1 Gb/s port, both ports run at 1 Gb/s in each direction.
If the ports are not directly connected, the fabric switch that connects the ports determines the signaling
speed.
Model naming
The M-series switches are typically called HP StorageWorks Edge Switches or Directors. Directors are
core (enterprise-class) switches. The Edge Switch 2/32 is a mid-range edge switch. The Edge Switch
2/12 and 2/24 are entry-level edge switches. The M-series embedded switch for HP p-Class
BladeSystem servers is called the McDATA 4 Gb SAN Switch.
Switch models
Table 60 describes the M-series switches supported by HP (1 Gb/s, 2 Gb/s, and 4 Gb/s M-series
Fibre Channel switch). Table 62 describes HP and legacy switches.
HP supports all M-series switches in a fabric if you:
Use the firmware versions listed in Table 60, and Table 62. All like switch models must use the
same version when configured in a single-fabric or multi-fabric SAN (see Table 60, Table 61,
Table 61, and Table 62). The firmware for the McDATA 4 Gb SAN Switch for HP p-Class
BladeSystem must be compatible with the firmware used on HP StorageWorks Edge Switches and
Directors. When updating switch firmware, you can use two successive switch firmware versions
temporarily in a single-fabric or multi-fabric SAN.
Follow the fabric rules. (See Fibre Channel fabric rules on page 161.)
For the latest information on supported M-series switches and firmware versions, see the HP SAN
Infrastructure website: http://h18006.www1.hp.com/storage/saninfrastructure.html.
