Intermec EasyCoder PD4—Service Manual 31
Chapter 6—Transfer Ribbon Mechanism
6.4 Ribbon Out Sensor
Description
The ribbon out sensor is attached to the center section from the electronics
compartment using a single screw. The sensor is connected to connector
CN11 on the main board.
The sensor assy consists of a LED and a sensor mounted on a circuit board.
The LED emits a beam of light that is detected by the sensor. The ribbon
supply unit has a fl ange with slots situated so the light is intermittently
let through or interrupted as the fl ange rotates. If no rotation is detected
during printing, an out-of-ribbon condition is assumed. This causes error
17 “Out of ribbon” if the printer is set up for thermal transfer printing. If
the printer is set up for direct thermal printing, the ribbon out sensor is not
used.
Replacement
Before replacing the sensor, check that the malfunction is not caused by
dust or foreign objects. Also disconnect and connect the cable to the main
board a few times to remove any oxide.
To remove the ribbon out sensor, follow these steps:
1 Disconnect the power cord and remove the left-hand panel as described
in Chapter 3.2. Carefully read the safety instructions in Chapter 3.2!
2 Disconnect the cable from the CN11 at the top of the main board.
3 Remove the cable from the clip and plastic spiral binding.
4 From inside the electronics compartment, remove the single screw and
washer that holds the sensor pcb to the center section.
5 Pull out the sensor and the isolating sheet.
6 Install the replacement sensor in reverse order. Do not forget to fi t the
isolating sheet between the sensor and the center section.
