18.1 Checking the engine oil level
Info
The engine oil level can be checked on a cold or hot engine.
Preparatory work
Stand the motorcycle upright on a horizontal surface.
Remove the engine cowl. ( p. 38)
Remove the front fairing. ( p. 38)

Condition
The engine is cold.
Check the engine oil level.
The engine oil reaches the middle of viewer

» If the engine oil does not reach the middle of the viewer:
Add engine oil. ( p. 68)
Condition
The engine is at operating temperature.
Check the engine oil level.

After switching off the engine, wait one minute before checking the
level.

Danger of scaldingEngine oil and gear oil get very hot when the motorcycle is ridden.
Wear appropriate protective clothing and safety gloves. In case of burns, rinse immediately with lukewarm water.

Environmental hazardHazardous substances cause environmental damage.
Oil, grease, filters, fuel, cleaners, brake fluid, etc., should be disposed of as stipulated in applicable regulations.

Drain the engine oil only when the engine is warm.

Raise the rear of the motorcycle with lifting gear. ( p. 35)
Remove the engine cowl. ( p. 38)
Remove the front fairing. ( p. 38)

Place a suitable container under the engine.
Remove the oil drain plug

with the magnet and seal ring.
