Preparation Before Surgery

Leica MLS500 light source
Intended use: The Leica MLS500 light source serves as the illu-
mination system for the Leica HM500/HM500 Dental microscope.
The patented optics in the instrument focus the light arc of the
lamp via optics and mirrors to a light guide with a diameter of
1.5 mm. This process filters out the unwanted infrared radiation
(heat) and UV radiation (danger to skin). The fiber-optic light
guide guides the light to the microscope via total internal
reflection. The brightness can be regulated by means of a
mechanical diaphragm while keeping the color temperature
constant. In addition, filters can be swung in which make it
easier to work under special conditions.
Warning 4
Risk of eye injuries
Before starting up the Leica MLS500 light source make
sure that nobody will be dazzled by the light-emitting
optics on the headset.
Never look directly into the light outlets of the
Leica HM500 microscope, the Leica MLS500 light
source or the fiber-optic light guide when the instru-
ment is in operation.
Never direct the light beam directly onto the eye.
Never use the Leica MLS500 light source for eye
surgery or surgical procedures which require direct
illumination of the eye.
With the Leica MLS500 light source switched on and
the fiber-optic light guide unplugged, reduce the
brightness control of the Leica MLS500 light source to the
minimum level.
Warning 5
Risk of burn injuries
Never operate the fiber-optic light guide without micro-
scope optics.
Never touch the fiber-optic light guide plug once it has
been unplugged from the Leica MLS500 light source.
Always let the plug cool down.
Switch off the Leica MLS500 light source before
pulling out the fiber-optic light guide.
After use, unplug the fiber-optic light guide from the
Leica MLS500 light source to prevent light accidentally
being emitted from the optical outlet end of the fiber-
optic light guide.
Do not use a damaged or kinked fiber-optic light guide.
Warning 6
Risk to patients from failure of the Leica MLS500 light
source
Change the lamp before the end of its theoretical
service life.
Warning 7
Risk of explosion
Do not use the Leica MLS500 light source in areas
subject to explosion hazards.
Do not use the Leica MLS500 light source with flam-
mable mixtures such as anesthetics, oxygen or disin-
fectants.
Caution 8
Risk of fire damage
Keep a distance of at least 250 mm between the
microscope outlet optics and other objects.
Caution 9
Damage to the Leica MLS500 light source
Before using a defibrillator remove the Leica MLS500
light source from the operating area.
Do not operate the MLS500 light source near water or
in rooms with extreme humidity.
Never place flammable materials close to the
Leica MLS500 light source.
Keep the Leica MLS500 light source well away from
any heat sources.
Do not place any liquids on the Leica MLS500 light
source or spill any liquid over the Leica MLS500 light
source.
Keep the ventilation openings of the Leica MLS500
light source unobstructed so as to prevent overheat-
ing.
Ensure that the free circulation of air is not impeded
and that a distance of at least 10 cm is kept between
the ventilation openings and other objects.
The Leica MLS500 light source should only be used in
enclosed spaces.
Do not use the Leica MLS500 light source in spaces
that are too confined (such as boxes) to ensure suffi-
cient cooling and air circulation.
The area around the MLS500 light source should be
kept clean and free of dust and fluff so that the instru-
ment fans do not suck in any dirt.
Do not push objects into the Leica MLS500 light
source.
The MLS500 light source must be used with the power
cables provided (in the USA, "Hospital Grade" or
"Hospital Only" power cables in accordance with
UL817/UL498).
Never open the instrument or components unless
instructed expressly to do so in this manual.
Select the future location according to the following criteria:
No high humidity (see Technical Data)
Normal room temperature (see Technical Data)
Keep ventilation slots unobstructed
Not for use with flammable mixtures (such as anesthetic,
oxygen, disinfectant, etc.).
Install the Leica MLS500 so that the power plug is accessi-
ble, allowing the light source to be disconnected from the
power supply.
