MACHINERY PROTECTION AND CONDITION MONITORING
For a MPC4
Mk2
module delivered as part of a VM600
Mk2
solution, the MPC4
Mk2
module
normally comes with the latest version of each module firmware: recovery, operational and
proof test.
For a MPC4
Mk2
module delivered as a spare part, the MPC4
Mk2
module normally runs the
latest version of the module recovery firmware, which allows the other firmware (operational
and/or proof test) to be changed/uploaded as required.
See also 2.2.3 MPC4
Mk2
module factory assigned defaults.
VibroSight System Manager can be used to display the firmware available on a MPC4
Mk2
module (see 3.3.5 Checking the firmware for a MPC4
Mk2
module) and to change/upgrade the
module firmware, as required (3.3.6 Changing the firmware for a MPC4
Mk2
module).

Description
Operational firmware
(640-025-vvv-ppp.Mpc4g2Fw)
The operational firmware is the main firmware used by the
MPC4
Mk2
module. A MPC4
Mk2
module will always default
to running the operational firmware (if available), after a
successful reboot and power-on self-test (POST).
Note: A MPC4
Mk2
module takes approximately 20 seconds to boot and
complete its power-on self-test (POST).
Recovery firmware
(640-031-vvv-ppp.Mpc4g2Fw)
The recovery firmware allows a MPC4
Mk2
module to
recover in the event of a problem with the operational
firmware. For example, corrupted operational firmware due
to a power supply problem during a firmware update.
Proof test firmware
(640-032-vvv-ppp.VxeFw)
The proof test firmware is used to run a diagnostics test
(that is, built-in self-test (BIST)) on the MPC4
Mk2
module in
order to verify the status of the module and its components
(hardware and firmware).
Note: Use of proof testing is primarily intended for
safety-related applications.
Notes
The different MPC4
Mk2
module firmware is identified by different part numbers (PNRs) as follows:
The operational firmware is identified by the part number (PNR): 640-025-vvv-ppp (file name 640-025-vvv-ppp and
file name extension Mpc4g2Fw).
The recovery firmware is identified by the part number (PNR): 640-031-vvv-ppp (file name 640-031-vvv-ppp and
file name extension Mpc4g2Fw).
The proof test firmware is identified by the part number (PNR): 640-032-vvv-ppp (file name 640-032-vvv-ppp and
file name extension VxeFw).
In a MPC4
Mk2
module firmware part number (PNR):
vvv represents the version number of the firmware.
ppp represents the patch number of the firmware.
For example, PNR 640-025-002-000 is an official firmware release – version 2, patch 0 – of the operational firmware for the
MPC4
Mk2
module, while PNR 640-025-vvv-ppp is an unofficial Engineering firmware release of the operational firmware.
For the launch of the VM600
Mk2
machinery protection system (MPS) in the first half of 2021, the early versions of the
MPC4
Mk2
module’s operational firmware will primarily support machinery protection functionality only. At the end of 2021,
MPC4
Mk2
module’s will be able to support both machinery protection functionality and condition monitoring, with the release
of an additional operational firmware for condition monitoring (PNR 640-033-vvv-ppp).
