APPENDIX D: Simple Radio Protocol/Phonetic Alphabet
Alert the called party first by using his or her name or call sign (vehicle number) first,
then identify yourself. Subsequent communication can be carried on without
identifying the name or call sign.
You say: To indicate:
“over” You have finished this part of your communication
and you want the other person to respond.
“roger” You have understood instructions or a request.
“out” You are ending your communications. This lets the
Talkgroup know that you are finished and that the
Talkgroup is free for others to use.
Example:
Joan: “Jim, this is Joan. Over.”
Jim: “Joan, this is Jim. Over.”
Joan: “Would you bring your truck in for refueling? Over.”
Jim: “Roger. I will be in at 11:30. Over.”
Joan: “I will see you then. Out.”
Jim: “Out.”
One unit (206) calling a second unit (207):
206: “207, this is 206. Over.”
207: “206, this is 207. Over.”
206: “When you complete the job on Colby, will you let us know?”
207: “Roger. We should be here another hour. Over.”
206: “Roger. Out.”
207: “Out.”
