Overview

This document describes the OPTEX OVS-02GT Virtual Loop Vehicle Detection Sensor, a device designed for vehicle detection in various gate and barrier applications.

Function Description

The OVS-02GT is a vehicle detection sensor that utilizes microwave reflection and FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) technology to detect the entry, presence, and departure of vehicles. It is specifically designed for applications such as:

  • Barrier Activation and Protection: Opening and protecting barrier gates.
  • Slide Gate Activation and Protection: Opening and protecting slide gates.
  • Swing Gate Activation and Protection: Opening and protecting swing gates.
  • Swing Gate Shadow (or Center Loop): Preventing swing gates from closing on a vehicle.
  • Car Warning: Notifying pedestrians of approaching vehicles and detecting approaching vehicles only.

The sensor operates by detecting changes in the microwave reflection within a defined detection area. When a vehicle enters this area, the sensor changes from a non-detection to a detection status. It maintains the detection status as long as the vehicle remains in the area and reverts to non-detection when the vehicle leaves. The sensor can differentiate between approaching and receding objects, which is particularly useful for reducing false detections of vehicles passing in the same direction.

Important Technical Specifications

The OVS-02GT sensor has specific requirements for optimal performance:

  • Vehicle Dimensions:
    • Length: 3300mm (130in.) to 5000mm (197in.)
    • Width: 1400mm (55in.) to 1900mm (75in.)
    • Height: 1200mm (47in.) to 2100mm (83in.)
    • Minimum Ground Clearance: 150-250mm (6-10in.)
    • Total Vehicle Weight: 2.5t (5512lb.) or less
  • Vehicle Speed: Detects vehicles approaching at 2-35km/h (1.2-22mi/h).
  • Installation Height: The bottom of the sensor should be 500mm (20in.) from the ground.
  • Installation Angle: Typically 90° for barrier, slide, and swing gate applications, and 30° for car warning applications. The sensor unit can rotate 96° left and right for angle adjustment.
  • Detection Range: Adjustable based on road width and installation angle. For example, at a 45° installation, the detection range can be up to 8.0m (26.2ft.) for a 6.5m (21.3ft.) road width. At a 30° installation, it can be up to 8.0m (26.2ft.) for a 4.5m (14.8ft.) road width.
  • Power Supply: 12 to 24VAC/DC.
  • Output: Non-voltage solid state relay output (30VDC 0.3A or less) and non-voltage mechanical relay output (30VDC 1A or less).
  • Heater: Built-in heater automatically activates when external temperature drops to 5°C (41°F) or lower to minimize frost and snow influence. Power consumption for the heater ranges from 90mA to 300mA depending on the setting (Low/High).
  • Environmental Protection: IP66/NEMA4.
  • Dimensions: 170mm (6 11/16in.) height, 78mm (3 5/64in.) width, 80mm (3 5/32in.) depth.
  • Conduit Hole: Φ21mm (3/4in.) or Φ21(27/32in.) for conduit pipe.

Usage Features

The OVS-02GT offers several features for flexible and reliable operation:

  • Smartphone App Integration (OPTEX Virtual Loop): The sensor can be programmed and configured using a dedicated smartphone app (available on AppStore and GooglePlay). This allows for:
    • Remote Settings Adjustment: Adjusting parameters like detection range, sensitivity, relay response time, and hold timer.
    • Real-time Status Monitoring: Checking the sensor's operation status (standby, pre-detection, detection, calibration uncompleted, errors) via the app.
    • Calibration: Performing and verifying calibration steps.
    • Detection Area Check: Visually checking the invisible detection area using indicators on the app.
    • Favorite Settings: Saving and sharing sensor configurations.
    • Password Protection: Setting a login password for the sensor.
  • Operation Indicator: An LED indicator on the sensor unit provides visual feedback on its status (e.g., Solid Green for standby, Solid Red for detection, Blinking Blue for calibration uncompleted). This indicator can be toggled On/Off via the app or by holding a magnet near it.
  • Multiple Output Modes: Supports various output types (Holding, Pulse IN, Pulse OUT) and allows adjustment of pulse time duration, delay, and hold timer to suit different gate system requirements.
  • Sensitivity Adjustments:
    • Main Sensitivity: Adjusts the sensitivity for vehicle entry detection.
    • Fine Tuning Presence: Adjusts the sensitivity for switching to non-detection when a vehicle leaves the area, helping to clear the space empty.
    • Close Range Sensitivity: Adjusts sensitivity for objects 100-500mm (4-20in.) from the sensor.
    • Side Approach Detection: Enhances sensitivity for vehicles approaching from the side (only for 90° settings), with adjustable duration.
    • Vibration Sensitivity: Adjusts the ability to maintain detection during vibrations (e.g., from an EV), and helps avoid false detections due to rain, snow, or tailgating.
    • Sensitivity Boost: Temporarily increases sensitivity after a vehicle passes to detect backward-rolling vehicles, useful for parking lot exits with inclines.
  • Relay Response Time: Adjustable recognition time of the sensor.
  • Presence Detection Timer: Starts calibration regularly, regardless of detection status, to prevent false detections due to ambient condition changes.
  • Slide Gate Cancellation: Prevents false detection when a slide gate closes, allowing the sensor to ignore the closing gate movement.
  • Input Functions: Supports Link (OR gate, AND gate) for integration with other devices, Inhibit to disable sensor outputs, and Wake to maximize sensitivity via external input.
  • Factory Reset: All settings, including password and calibration values, can be returned to factory defaults by pressing and holding the reset button for 5-10 seconds or via the app.

Maintenance Features

The OVS-02GT is designed for straightforward maintenance:

  • Cleaning: The unit body can be wiped lightly with a damp soft brush or cloth. For stubborn dirt, a cloth dampened with a neutral detergent can be used.
    • Important: Do not use chemicals such as alcohol or high-pressure washing machines.
  • Regular Cleaning: It is recommended to clean the unit regularly to ensure optimal performance.
  • Non-Modifiable Design: The unit should not be disassembled, modified, painted, or have stickers applied to it, as this can affect sensing performance and may cause fire or electric shock.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide with symptoms, causes, and recommended actions for common issues like power problems, calibration errors, detection failures, and false detections.
  • Sensor Reset: If the sensor is relocated or experiences issues, a factory reset can restore default settings, including calibration values. This can be done via a physical button or through the smartphone app.
