3.3.2
Connecting the protective earth
A connected protective conductor conducts hazardous electric charges from the metal
enclosure. The current that flows through the protective conductor in such a fault scenario,
triggers an upstream circuit breaker that disconnects the device from the power supply.
The protective conductor also discharges any interference transmitted from external power
supply cables, signal cables or cables to the I/O devices. The connection for the protective
earth is labeled with the following symbol:
Requirement
T20 screwdriver
Cable lug for M4
Protective earth with a minimum cross-section of 2.5 mm
2
Procedure
Clamp the cable lug onto the protective earth.
Firmly attach the cable lug to the protective
conductor connection on the device using the
M4 thread (see part labeled).
Connect the protective conductor to the pro-
tective conductor connection of the cabinet or
the plant in which the device is installed.
