6 Common Service Procedures
PTO Clutch Service
6 - 16
BURNISHING THE CLUTCH
This procedure should be used during new unit setup or
whenever a new PTO clutch is installed. The purpose of
burnishing the PTO clutch is to remove anti-corrosion
coatings and break in the clutch under controlled condi-
tions.
Before the front PTO clutch is used for the first time, it
should be burnished as follows. To burnish the clutch,
the mower must be installed.
1. Select a safe area to operate the tractor with the
mower deck installed.
2. Before the tractor is started, engaged the parking
brake, disengaged the front PTO switch (PTO switch
pushed in), and sit in the operator’s seat.
3. Start the engine and set at full throttle.
4. Engage the front PTO switch (pull the front PTO
switch out to the ON position).
5. Leave engaged for 15 seconds.
6. Disengage the PTO switch (push in to the OFF posi-
tion).
7. Wait for mower drive shaft to come to a complete
stop.
8. Repeat steps 4, 5, 6, and 7 ten times to burnish the
clutch.
9. Recheck the mower blade stopping time. Stopping
time must be 5 seconds or less. If the stop time is
longer than 5 seconds, adjust the clutch air gap (see
Section 4, ADJUSTMENTS).
