Group 08, Section 12, Page 2 Mechanical Dock Leveler – M and FMC
Issue Date: 10/01/01, Rev, 0 (Part #038-550E)
PROBABLE CAUSE OF DAMAGED COMPONENTS – cont’d
Figure 54
A build-up of foreign material at one location along the hinge, between the lip and
the headboard, causing that area to take the full load of stopping the hinging action.
This will cause the remainder of the lip to bend into contact with the headboard when
a load passes over and also places an extreme load on the hinge spools in the area
of the build-up. A bent lip and/or broken hinge spools are the usual result of this lack
of maintenance. Repair or replace components as required. A Preventative
Maintenance Program, can prevent re-occurrence.
Conditions of the approach area to the dock location may cause vehicles to be
parked out-of-square to the dock leveler. This can cause the dock leveler lip to be
unsupported at one side when resting on the vehicle load bed. Using the unit when
this condition exists will cause extreme overload on the lip hinge and lip, causing
damage to both. This is an extremely dangerous condition and must be reported to
the person/persons responsible for safety in the dock area. Repair is appropriate
providing future vehicles will be parked squarely to the dock.
When it is determined that the everyday loads that are passing over the dock leveler
do not exceed its rated capacity and no other cause can be found for the damage,
investigate the possibility of a recent one-time heavy load that may have caused the
damage. Eg: A very heavy piece of machinery received or shipped out over the
dock leveler. Repair or replace components as required.
Missing dock bumpers, incorrect bumper heights or careless driver may cause a
vehicle to strike the dock leveler lip when backing into position at the dock. It may
be difficult to confirm that damage was caused in this way, but if this is suspected to
be the cause of lip damage, inspect for other hidden damage that may be present.
Eg: Damage to front beam of frame, deck stop bars, lip keepers, frame to curb
angle welds, etc. Repair or replace components as required, including dock
bumpers.
