LIP CROWN MODIFICATION – Special Application
Note: Measuring Lip Crown is described in the Lip Replacement Section,
Group 08, Section 13, Pages 7 and 8.
Decreasing Lip Crown
The lip to deck hinge connection is out-
of-parallel (crowned) when the lip is in
fully raised working position. This
provides the 12” above dock height
working range required at a multi-use
dock. See Figure 81.
In a single purpose application where
the height differential between truck
bed and dock is always slight,
decreasing the crown can often
improve the efficiency of the loading /
unloading operation.
When a dock leveler has no lip crown,
the tip of the lip will not make contact
with a vehicle load bed that is higher
than the dock. The tip of the lip
becomes a sharp edge that will
damage the tires, etc. of the material
handling truck as it exits the vehicle.
See Figure 82.
Increase the hinging action of the lip by
removing material from the hinge end
of the lip plate where it makes contact
with the headboard. See Figure 83.
The amount of material to be removed
is determined by the decrease of crown
required.
