History has shown that when a dock leveler is properly maintained and used within its
capacity rating, the only service required on the lip and lip hinge is lubrication of the
hinge pin and spools, and cleaning of the upper hinge area where the lip plate makes
contact with the headboard, Figure 53. For this reason, it is recommended that when a
damaged lip or lip hinge is observed, a study should be conducted to determine the
cause before repairs are performed.
As an example, it is common to find that the dock leveler capacity was suitable for the
application when installed, but that over the years the weight of the loads passing over
the unit have increased to the point that overloading is an everyday occurrence. In this
instance, replacing a bent lip or broken lip hinge spool will not be an effective or long
lasting repair. The complete unit should be replaced with an appropriately higher
capacity model. This will provide the correct lip, lip hinge and deck strength demanded
by the heavier loads and will be mechanically balanced to properly extend a heavier lip.
PROBABLE CAUSE OF DAMAGED COMPONENTS
Lack of lubrication over an extended period of time can cause the hinge spools and
hinge pin to wear, See Figure 53. This is evident when the lip crown, Figure 81,
Group 08, Section 14, Page 1 is reduced to the point that when servicing a vehicle
that is above dock height, the tip of the lip does not make contact with the vehicle
load bed. This can cause severe damage to the tires or wheels of a materials
handling truck as it exits the vehicle. Repair or replace components as required.
