12. Torque settings
WARNING
Only use proper tools to tighten screws and bolts. Observe the
speciedtorquesetting.Thecomponentmanufacturer'storque
settings take precedence (where available). Failure to comply can
result in screws/bolts becoming loose, tearing away or fracturing. If

components can also be damaged. Tighten all safety-relevant screws
and bolts with a torque wrench. This indicates the corresponding
torque in newton meters (Nm) or foot pound [ft·lb].
Correct tightening force on fasteners –nuts, bolts, screws– on your
bike is important. Too little force and the fastener may not hold se-
curely. Too much force and the fastener can strip threads, stretch,
deform or break. Either way, incorrect tightening force can result in
component failure, which can cause you to lose control and fall.
Correctly tightening a fastener requires a calibrated torque wrench.
A professional bike mechanic with a torque wrench should torque the
fasteners on you bike. If you choose to work on your own bike, you
mustuseatorquewrenchandthecorrecttighteningtorquespecica-
tions from the bike or component manufacturer or from your dealer.

you to exercise care, and to have the fasteners you worked on checked
by your dealer as soon as possible.
