Aligning Your
SONAbeam Terminals
The alignment of your SONAbeam terminals is crucial to achieving optimal performance
with your link. The procedure to achieve alignment entails a systematic ‘search’ for an
optical signal from the associated (remote) terminal.
Both terminals in a link must be aligned in concert with each other. Therefore, you will
need to provide the tools, personnel and resources at both ends of the installed link while
executing the alignment phase of your installation.
This section describes the alignment procedure for the SONAbeam E-Series terminal.
NOTE…
The alignment of linking terminals is an extremely important operation. The care
and attention invested in this operation will directly reflect in the performance of
your optical link
Before You Begin…
The tools required to successfully align a SONAbeam terminal include:
5mm Allen wrench (available in the optional Basic Alignment Tool Kit)…
SONAbeam Alignment Telescope Assembly (available in the optional Basic
Alignment Tool Kit)…
Notebook Computer with the SONAbeam Terminal Controller software
installed…
Serial or USB cable to interface the PC with the Terminal …
As an alternative to using a computer with STC software and the serial cable, a
suitable digital voltmeter can be used.
A means of communications between the installation personnel at both link
sites… (While cell phones are an ideal solution, ‘walkie-talkies’ can also
accommodate this function.)
NOTE…
As a link comprises two terminals, your alignment toolkit will require two of
everything in order to provide a complete alignment kit at each end of your
link…
