Solving Modem Problems

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Modem loses
connection.
The cable connection
is loose.
Verify that the modem
cable is securely
connected.
Call Waiting has not
been disabled.
To disable Call Waiting
within Windows, double-
click Modems in Control
Panel. Click the General
tab

Dialing Proper-
ties

My Locations.
Contact your local phone
company if you do not
know the code to disable
Call Waiting.
Hang-up Delay S
Register (S10) is set
too low and noise on
the line is causing the
modem to disconnect.
To change S10 default to
150:
Go to HyperTerminal
Command Mode, type
ATS10=150, then press
Enter.
Characters are
garbled or transfer
rates are slow.
There is noise in the
telephone line.
Verify that the modem
cable is securely
connected.
Request a telephone line
filter from your local
telephone company.
Cellular connection
doesn’t work (North
America only).
Environmental factors
are interfering with the
connection.
