Solving Modem Problems
Problem Possible Cause Solution
No dial tone. Phone service is not
connected or is
temporarily inter-
rupted.
Connect a phone to the
wall jack. If the phone
has no dial tone, contact
your phone company or
building manager.
The modem is not
responding to
commands from the
keyboard.
To verify the modem and
computer are
communicating:
1. Go to HyperTerminal
Terminal Mode, type
AT and press
Enter.

If the modem
displays OK, the
modem and
computer are
working together.
■
If the modem
displays ERROR,
or does not
respond, restart the
computer and
repeat step 1.
2. Type ATDT and
listen for a dial tone.
3. Type ATH0 to hang
up.
Speaker Control AT
Command (ATM) is
set to 0.
To set the Speaker
Control to 1:
1. Go to HyperTerminal
Command Mode,
type ATM1, then
press
Enter.
2. Type ATH1 and
listen for the dial
tone.
3. Type ATH0 to hang
up.
