HP Smart Array P711m/P712m SAS Controller
HP P711m/P712m SAS controllers provide 6Gb/s SAS connections through the BladeSystem
c-Class enclosure high-speed mid-plane to the 6Gb/s SAS switch blade, allowing external SAS
storage enclosures to be connected to BladeSystem c-Class enclosures. Their 6Gb/s SAS technology
delivers data bandwidth up to 1200 MB/s per port (600 MB/s per SAS link), and is fully compatible
with 6G SAS, 3G SAS, 3G SATA, and 1.5 G SATA. Dual-port SAS and single-port SATA disk
drive interconnections are supported, offering deployment flexibility. In addition, both models
support HP Smart Array Server Software, including SmartStart, HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM).
Two models of 6Gb/s SAS controllers are supported for use in these 6G BladeSystem solutions:
the P712m, 256 MB cache controller satisfies the basic requirements for an HP c-Class external
SAS storage solution, while the P711m, 1GB cache controller has enhanced features, including
battery backed cache options that offers additional flexibility.
Key features of the P712m (entry-level controller):
• External shared SAS storage enclosures such as the P2000 G3 SAS MSA are supported.
• Up to two HP 6Gb SAS BL Switches are supported.
• 40-bit, 256MB cache.
• Two internal SAS ports:
Each internal port consists of 1x links, and is used to support internal drives.◦
◦ The internal ports support internal Solid State Drives (SSD) on the following server blade
models: BL280, BL490, and BL495.
• Two external SAS ports:
Each external port consists of two 2x SAS links, resulting in four SAS lanes.◦
◦ The 2x SAS links provide dual-domain support.
Key features of the P711m (high-end controller):
• External shared SAS storage enclosures, such as the P2000 G3 SAS MSA are supported.
• Up to four HP 6Gb SAS BL Switches are supported.
• 72-bit, 1GB Flash-Based Write Cache (FBWC).
• Four external SAS ports:
Each SAS port consists of two 2x SAS links, resulting in eight SAS lanes.◦
◦ The 2x SAS links provide dual-domain support.
