Specifies the excitation voltage applied to the bridge by an external DC voltage source. This value will be used to con-
vert strain bridge measurements on the specified channel.

External reference is not supported in DMM Digitize data acquisition mode.
Error -221,"Settings conflict; DMM digitizing mode has been disabled" will be generated when you send the
command to select an external reference for the strain measurement in DMM Digitize mode.
Strain bridge conversions require the value of the external bridge excitation voltage. For this voltage, you can ded-
icate a multiplexer channel to measure the excitation voltage, or can specify a known fixed voltage value.
When you select "FIXed", the excitation voltage specified by SENSe:STRain:EXCitation will be used for the strain con-
version.
When you select "EXTernal", the next-lowest channel configured for DCV measurements with reference mode
enabled (see SENSe:VOLTage:DC:REFerence command) will be used as the excitation voltage reference in the strain
conversion.

Query returns the type of excitation voltage reference currently set for the sense channel specified by <ch_list>.
– If you select an external reference, the instrument makes strain measurements relative to a previously-stored
excitation voltage measurement stored in the reference register. To store an excitation voltage, first configure a
multiplexer channel for an DC voltage measurement (see CONFigure:VOLTage:DC command). Then assign the
measurement from that channel as the external reference using the SENSe:VOLTage:DC:REFerence command.
